Chicago (EJP) When the Russian forces launched their invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 they fielded 3,200 combat-ready main battle tanks. On the other side, the Ukrainians could only deploy approximately 900. But almost a year of fighting and repeated defeats have taken a toll on the Russian military. The Russian military has lost between 1,800 to 3,296 main battle tanks in Ukraine, and that figure increases with every passing day.
According to a recent assessment by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the Russian military has lost approximately 50 percent of its T-72B and T-72B3M fleet, as well as many T-80 tanks.
As a result, the Russian military has had to rely on older weapon systems to support its offensive and defensive operations, with concomitant negative results. T-64 tanks, made more than 60 years ago, have been all the rage for a Russian military that losses between five to ten main battle tanks a day.
